Learn About the Various Vein Conditions That Are Affecting Your Cumming, Georgia Area Neighbors

At the North Georgia Vein Institute we specialize in treating vein disorders because up to 60% of all Americans, including many in Cumming and the surrounding areas, suffer from some type of vein disease. But, just because vein disorders are common doesn’t mean you shouldn’t worry about them.

Spider veins are a type of varicose vein, with size being the main difference between the two. Varicose veins result from the pooling of blood caused by a decreased flow of blood to the heart from the leg veins. This venous condition can be attributed to a number of causes, including:

  • Hereditary factors
  • Pregnancy
  • Cirrhosis
  • Obesity
  • Trauma to the legs
  • Pressure on the legs from serious lifting, straining, coughing
  • Occupations where people stand for long periods – wait staff, cooks, assembly line workers, teachers, beauticians, nurses

Conditions associated with vein disorders include:

  • Spider veins
  • Varicose veins
  • Restless leg syndrome
  • Blood clots

Vein Disorder Symptoms

While not everyone with varicose veins experiences symptoms, common indicators that you may have vein disorders include:

  • Enlarged, engorged vein or veins in the leg
  • Leg pain or aching
  • Changes in skin color
  • Itching or burning
  • Swelling
  • Throbbing
  • Feeling of heaviness
  • Exercise intolerance
  • Leg fatigue
  • Restlessness
  • Cramping

Spider Veins

Spider veins are actually a type of varicose vein, named because of their web-like appearance. They are small, dilated blood vessels that appear as red, purple and/or blue on the surface of the skin.

Easy to spot, these tiny veins usually cluster together and are found predominantly on the upper thigh, around the knee or along the ankles. Medically referred to as telangiectasias, spider veins range in size between 0.5 and 1 millimeter.

Our vein clinic offers several different spider vein treatments. To determine which procedure is best for you or if your spider veins are an indication of a more serious vein condition, contact our medical team for a complimentary diagnostic ultrasound.

Varicose Veins

Varicose veins occur when valves within a vein are not working properly and interrupt blood from flowing back to the heart. These large, sometimes twisted, raised veins are usually found bulging from the leg’s surface. Varicose veins can be painful and ache, especially if you are standing for long periods of time. Sometimes varicose veins point to more serious circulatory problems or health issues.

Some causes of vein disorders are:

  • Heredity
  • Pregnancy
  • Occupation
  • Being overweight

Not all varicose vein sufferers have visible signs of problems on the surface of the skin, the veins can be hidden deep within the leg. While some people experience no symptoms, others suffer from pain, swollen legs, discoloration, leg fatigue, burning and restless legs.

Major treatments for varicose veins are radiofrequency ablation, phlebectomy and sclerotherapy – all procedures offered at North Georgia Vein Institute. To discover which procedure is right for you or to see if you are possibly at risk for other circulatory problems, contact our medical team for a complimentary ultrasound screening.

Restless Leg Syndrome

Restless leg syndrome (RLS) can be a side effect of varicose and spider veins. Improper blood flow in your legs can cause an uncontrollable urge to move your legs when you are sitting or lying down for any period of time.

Our vein specialists can determine if your restless leg syndrome is related to a vein condition. To schedule an appointment for a complimentary ultrasound screening, please contact our medical team.

Diagnosing Varicose Veins in Cumming, GA and Surrounding Areas

In most people, varicose veins are on the surface of the skin and easy to spot. However, vein disorders are not always visible to the naked eye. At North Georgia Vein Institute, we use diagnostic ultrasound and vein mapping to determine if you have a below-the-skin vein disorder, gauge the seriousness of your vein issues and outline a course of treatments.

If you have spider or varicose veins and are experiencing any of the above symptoms, please contact our medical team.
